MORGANA

Celebrating three decades since its inception, Morgana, the all-women jazz quintet, marks a milestone in its illustrious journey. Founded in 1992 by saxophonist Fiona Burnett, Morgana boasts a stellar lineup of women musicians based in Melbourne, Australia. The original ensemble featured Lisa Young on vocals, Sue Johnson on piano, Annette Yates on double bass, and Sonja Horbelt on drums. Renowned for their dynamic performances and inventive improvisations, Morgana has graced major music and arts events, earning standing ovations and leaving a lasting impact on gender diversity in jazz.


With two critically acclaimed CD recordings, "Talk Walk Whisper" and "Have you Heard the News Today?," Morgana continues to captivate audiences with their world-class musicianship. Each member of the group is a leader in their respective instruments, with multiple awards and PhDs to their credit. Beyond their musical prowess, they have made significant contributions to performance practice and the advancement of Australian improvised music and jazz. As Morgana celebrates its 30th anniversary, the original members, Lisa Young, Fiona Burnett, Annette Yates, and Sonja Horbelt, are joined by the brilliant pianist Mina Yu, promising an unforgettable celebration of their enduring legacy.
