LILY THORNTON
Since completing her Masters degree at the Royal College of Music, Lily has become an active session player and performer both in London and Melbourne. She has recorded for many albums, short films, feature films, and documentaries including Treasures of Ancient Rome on BBC Four, as well as recordings for NAXOS and SONY playstation.
As well as regular work as a classical Cellist and Teacher, Lily enjoys a varied career which includes live TV work for Cooper + Koo on Dancing With the Stars, performing with Elektra Live feat. Sally Cooper, as well as working with local and visiting artists such as John Farnham, Mark Vincent and Olly Murs. Most recently Lily has been working as cello double and teacher to Kaya Scodelario on blockbuster film The Moon and The Sun, which comes out next year.
Lily Thornton completed her undergraduate degree in Performance with honors from the University of Melbourne, where she was awarded the Gwen Proctor Violoncello Prize and the Katherine Kearns Travelling Scholarship. During this time Lily studied with Christian Wojtowicz, performed in master classes for Li Wei Qin, the Takacs Quartet and the Tokyo String Quartet, and was principle cellist with the Melbourne University Symphony Orchestra. She was a regular member of the Australian Youth Orchestra, and attended the Australian International Symphonic Orchestral Institute as principle cellist on full scholarship.
While at the Royal College of Music, Lily has been Principle Cellist with the RCM Symphony Orchestra, and played under distinguished conductors such as Bernard Haitink. She has been an active chamber musician, most recently performing as part of the RCM Australian String Quartet at the Queens Jubilee garden party.
